chairman

My dear fellow exporters,

Senior officials of India and European Union (EU) recently held discussions on the long-stalled free trade pact and expressed willingness to address issues in a time-bound manner.

Launched in June 2007, the negotiations for the proposed Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA) have witnessed many hurdles with both sides having major differences on key issues like intellectual property rights, duty cut in automobile and spirits, and liberal visa regime.

The government needs to adopt a very cautious approach in this negotiation as the issues are very serious. Successful conclusion of the FTA would be one of the world’s largest trade agreements, benefiting more than 1.7 billion people. The FTA is also important for the Indian engineering sector as region wise EU is the largest engineering export destination.

How India is powering US retailer Target with digital innovations - Set up in 2005, Target India is the extended headquarters for the US retailing giant and operates as a fully-integrated part of the global team. Target has set up a large back office in India that has been able to scale beyond providing just IT support.  The Minneapolis-based discount retailer looks to the Bangalore center to tune up its innovation engine.

Target has set up tech incubators in Bangalore. The Target Accelerator Program will invest up to $30,000 in one or two companies every year, likely in return for equity but more importantly for first dibs on new products the start-ups make. As Target’s Beth Jacob said, “Innovation is core to our culture and strategy and we are always looking for new ideas to enhance the shopping experience of our guests.”

Bangalore Team supports Target’s global strategy across business areas such as technology, marketing, human resources, finance, merchandising, supply chain, analytics, and reporting. In fact, every business area at Target has team members in India.

But Target’s enduring competitive advantage isn’t longevity or a widespread network. It’s innovation. And a significant amount of the innovation wending its way to Target’s headquarters is created by its India crew.

Under the stewardship of Valli Bollavaram, Target India`s Enterprise data and BI engineering team has emerged as a classic example of India’s innovation and engineering potential. Bollavaram is tasked with making Target India an engineering focused organization. She is responsible for the strategic and operational aspects of Enterprise Data and Business Intelligence Engineering and has teams reporting to her based out of Bangalore, Minneapolis, and Sunnyvale.

Amazon announced a $3 billion investment into India, bringing its total commitment to $5 billion. “Our Amazon.in team is surpassing even our most ambitious planned milestones,” Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO and Founder, said in a statement. Amazon plans to open a “web services Cloud Region” in India. Its development centre in Hyderabad is set to become its largest software engineering and development centre outside of the US.

Star India, Indian media and entertainment company and a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox, announced it will invest an additional $5 billion in the country over the next three years. “We see huge potential in the Indian market and have been one of the largest foreign investors in India and the largest in the media and entertainment sector,” Uday Shankar, Chairman and CEO of Star India, said in a statement.

SunLink Corp a US solar power company has said it will partner with domestic Indian companies to deploy up to 1.4 giga watts of solar power over the next five years that should help create manufacturing and construction jobs. Separately, US and India have reaffirmed their joint efforts to tackle climate change and announced several climate and renewables-related joint initiatives. At least $60 million in clean energy financing will be deployed in solar and clean energy initiatives across India jointly by the two countries. Other initiatives include setting up the Clean Energy Finance Hub, which will partner with Indian financial institutions to boost renewables investments in India; and a U.S.-India Clean Energy Finance Task Force, which will boost payment security efforts for clean energy assets.

Westinghouse Electric Co. and Nuclear Power Corporation of India have agreed to start engineering and site design work for six nuclear power plant reactors in India. India and the US Export-Import Bank are expected to jointly finance the project, according to media reports. However, the final contract won`t be ready until June 2017.

A number of US businesses are on track to invest an additional $45 billion in India over the next two or three years, John Chambers, Chairman of US India Business Council and Cisco Executive Chairman, said in a statement. He added, “Given Prime Minister Modi’s track record towards implementing Digital India and key economic reforms, we are optimistic that this number will be dramatically exceeded, perhaps even doubled.”

Boeing Company’s partnership with Tata is at an advanced stage. Tata Advanced Materials Limited (TAML) and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) are delivering advanced, complex components and subassemblies for Boeing’s commercial and defense aircraft. Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited (TBAL) joint venture with TASL will soon start producing fuselage for world’s most advanced attack helicopter, AH-64 Apache in 2018.

Caterpillar Inc. announced that it will build a new, state-of-the-art, US$150mn engine manufacturing facility in India that will produce Perkins branded 4000 Series engines. Perkins is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Caterpillar. The company is also investing an additional US$62mn in its existing off-highway truck manufacturing facility in Chennai. The new investment to expand truck capacity in Chennai is in addition to a US$108mn investment for Chennai that Caterpillar announced in 2010. Together these new investments will help support customers in India and other growth markets, and are part of Caterpillar`s goal to be the leader in its industry in India. Caterpillar Group President Rich Lavin and Caterpillar India and ASEAN country manager Kevin Thieneman announced the new investments during an event celebrating the 40th anniversary of Caterpillar`s manufacturing facility in Thiruvallur, India.

Venezuela
(Source : Embassy of India, Caracas)

Venezuela`s PDVSA misses debt payments to India`s top oil producer: Reuters and other media reported that Venezuelan state oil-firm PDVSA has not made debt payments to India’s top oil producer ONGC for six months, and has previously used a Russian state-owned bank and another Indian energy company as intermediaries to make payments. According to media reports “ONGC Videsh, confirmed that PDVSA had fallen behind on the payments, but declined to give details on the delays. “They have got certain challenges at this stage,” ONGC Videsh said in an emailed response to Reuters’ questions. “They have assured that they are working on it (payment of dues). In due course it will be settled and follow up steps will be undertaken.” “We have a good working relationship with PDVSA,” ONGC said. PDVSA declined to comment. But the two sources, who requested anonymity, said PDVSA has made no payment since April on what was a US$ 540 million backlog of dividends owed to ONGC for an investment the Indian firm made in an energy project in Venezuela. Details of the payment and Gazprombank’s involvement have not previously been published. India’s Reliance Industries Ltd, owner of the world’s biggest refining complex and one of PDVSA’s biggest oil buyers, paid US$ 68.66 million to ONGC on behalf of PDVSA in April, the sources said. Gazprombank and Reliance did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. PDVSA and ONGC Videsh Ltd last year signed a deal for PDVSA to pay the debt by assigning the Indian firm 17,000 barrels per day of oil. Under the agreement, PDVSA sells the oil on behalf of ONGC and sends the cash to the Indian company. ONGC cannot take delivery of the oil because its Mangalore refinery is unable to process Venezuela’s heavy crude. Venezuela has often used oil to repay debt: it owes billions of dollars to both Russia and China and is paying both with oil. Many multinational firms have written off their Venezuelan operations and investments, but ONGC is aiming to expand in the South American country. The Indian firm is seeking to raise funding for Venezuela’s San Cristobal oil project, in which the Indian company has a 40% stake. PDVSA and ONGC aim to raise oil output from the project to about 27,000 bpd from 18,000 bpd.”

PDVSA must pay interests for US$ 313.7 million: Friday, November 10, is the deadline for the grace period of the interests of bonds PDVSA 2027, slated to be paid on October 12. According to media reports, PDVSA has paid only the coupon for bond 2037, matured last October, besides the principal amount for bond 2020 and the repayment of bond 2017; the latter two lacked a 30-day grace period, as opposed to the other ones. Therefore, Pdvsa is lagging behind its commitments for US$ 313.7 million. The expiry date for the payment of additional US$ 539 million is coming soon. Venezuela has accrued interests in arrears for the bonds 2019, 2024, 2025 and 2026, totaling US$ 437.1 million.
