Maltese trade delegation visited India: Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion of Malta Carmelo Abela led a 26-strong trade delegation of Malta-based entrepreneurs in India to explore business and investment opportunities. The delegation coordinated by Trade Malta, was made up of officials from companies with main export activities in manufacturing - including food and beverage, engineering, clean technologies and renewable energy, training and education, medical health services and life sciences, information communication technology (ICT), and logistics services. Minister Abela attended the 4th India-Europe 29 Business Forum, organised by the Indian Ministry for External Affairs in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). The Forum aimed to promote strategic collaborations between Indian and European economies, hands on understanding of business opportunities existing in both regions, and building new partnerships while strengthening existing ones. Minister Abela focused on Malta’s ability to attract cutting-edge investments in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, IT, film production, and tourism. “Malta is open for business,” he remarked, “this is attested by the good number of Malta-based companies and organisations that have travelled all the way to attend this forum.
On the margins of the India-Europe 29 Business Forum, Minister Abela also took part in a roundtable discussion with Indian entrepreneurs from the pharmaceutical sector. Minister Abela explained that Malta’s combined capacity to offer high-quality facilities in terms of manufacturing and logistics, makes it particularly well-positioned to attract investment from Indian pharmaceutical companies wishing to manufacture and export in the region. Pharmaceutical companies would also benefit from the services of the Malta Medicines Authority to provide certification of the highest standard. Minister Abela and his trade delegation also travelled to Mumbai to participate in business fora organised by the All India Association of Industries and by the Confederation of Indian Industry. ?
Exports by India to Malta for the period April 2017-March 2018 stood at US$ 167.50 million and India’s imports from Malta stood at US$13.54 million.

India-Taiwan bilateral trade and investment
In the month of February, total Indian export to Taiwan is USD 271.5 million, which is a decrease of 4.58% as compared to the same period of last year; total Indian imports from Taiwan is USD 304.9 million, which is an increase of 49.33%. The total volume of trade between India and Taiwan in December 2017 was USD 574.4 million.
Wistron to invest in India: Taiwanese electronics OEM Wistron is planning to build a new factory in India to expand its production capacity there over the next five years. In the first stage, Wistron will invest approx USD 160 million in building a plant in Bangalore to assemble the iPhone 6 and other international smartphone brands. [Note: The company has submitted documents needed for incorporation in India for attestation.]
Pegatron announces intention to invest in India: Speaking at the year-end news conference, the CEO of Taiwanese electronic OEM Pegatron said that the company was planning to set up a factory in India in 2018. Pegatron announced its plan to invest in India as early as 2016, but still had concerns about the shortage of local management personnel at the time. The CEO added that the company would make a move in the second half of the year at the earliest.
Taiwan launches India-focussed EV alliance: TAITRA Chairman James Huang announced the launch of Taiwan Electric Vehicle Alliance, consisting of 30 companies in the EV production chain that will enter the Indian market together. At the Taiwan Expo in New Delhi in May 2018, TAITRA will set up an EV section for the Alliance to showcase their technologies. Huang said that there could be an EV demonstration zone in Gujarat, where some Taiwanese petrochemical companies are planning to invest.
India Corporate Day in Taipei: In a first of its kind, the India branch of Singapore-based fund managing firm PhillipsCapital organized an India Corporate Day in Taipei on February 06, 2018. DG, ITA, Godrej Chairman Mr Adi Godrej, HDFC Vice Chairman, representatives from ICICI, DMICDC and Container Corporation of India spoke at the event to the Taiwanese fund managers and financial institutions.
Hsinchu Science Park delegation visits India: A Taiwanese delegation led by Deputy Director General Andrea T. J. Hsu of Hsinchu Science Park Bureau is visiting organizations including Electronic Industries Association of India, Indian Cellular Association, Indian Electrical & Electronics Manufacturers’ Association and India Electronics & Semiconductor Association in New Delhi from February 5-9, 2018. The visit is aimed at sharing Taiwan’s success in building infrastructure and supplying talents for science parks and offer its experience in cellphone manufacturing.
Anti-dumping investigation against Taiwan: Ministry of Commerce & Industry has issued a report that recommends collection of anti-dumping duties on imports of Methyl Ethyl Ketone from Taiwan, China, Japan, and South Africa. Taiwanese imports account for the largest market share in India, reaching 46.98% last year. There will be a duty of US$ 1112.95 per metric ton imposed on Taiwanese imports, which will double the export price. Ministry of Finance will decide whether to collect anti-dumping duties in three months.
Taiwanese Atomic Energy Council to transfer bioethanol production technology to Indian company: Director General of the Institute of Nuclear Energy Research at the Atomic Energy Council (AEC) said that the AEC would transfer the Council`s skills of bioethanol production from rice straw to a private Indian energy company by signing a contract with it in the second half of this year. DG said that the institute has succeeded in mass-producing bioethanol from from rice straw.
Taiwan investment in India grows by 131.1% and Indian investment in Taiwan increases by 58.4%: According to the 2017 statistics released by the Investment Commission at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the direct investment by Taiwan in India has grown by 131.1% and by India in Taiwan by 58.4%. In terms of the number of approved FDI cases by countries targeted by the New southbound Policy, Indian investment showed the highest annual increase of 480.23%.
Telangana signs MoU with Taoyuan: Telangana Government signed an MoU with Taoyuan City of Taiwan for better technology partnership in the State. IT Minister K T Rama Rao and Principal Secretary Jayesh Ranjan signed the agreement with Robert Huang, Director of the Board of Taiwan company at World IT Congress 2018 in Hyderabad.
Maharashtra grows impatient regarding Foxconn investment: According to the Indian media reports, Maharashtra government is growing impatient for a USD 5 billion investment promised by Foxconn that is expected to create 50,000 jobs by 2020. The two sides signed an MoU regarding the project in 2015, but little progress has been reportedly made since then. Foxconn officials said they have contacted the state government to show their commitment to the project and would present an action plan to the local minister after the Lunar New Year holiday.
Taiwan Water Corp. to partner with India’s Tata Group: Taiwan Water Corp. Chairperson Kuo Ming-chun said that the company plans to move into both the Indian and Indonesian markets. It is currently working on forming a partnership with Tata Group for joint investment and will target two or three Indian states at first, said Kuo, adding that the timeline will become clearer once the budget for 2019 is passed.

The popularity of construction materials from India has pushed its continued growth in the market and become major competitor for Thai manufacturers. Thai construction materials manufactures have to create differences in innovation and design in addition to business plan adjustment. Saha Mosaic Industry Co plans to further expand its export markets, in particular, CLMV countries.
