chairman

My dear fellow exporters,

Protection of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) has with time become a driving factor for the knowledge based industries like engineering to achieve better competitiveness and ensure higher growth. Majority of the countries are quite aware about the influence of IPR and have already adopted strategies for implementing strong IPR protection, but Indian industries, particularly the MSMEs are yet to recognize the indispensability of IPR and making full use of it in order to protect their innovations despite of having government policies in place. It is essential for the Indian MSMEs to demonstrate a positive approach towards creation, protection and management of IPR so as to enable them to compete in the global market and achieve higher profits in business.

With the objective of raising the awareness on the influence of IPR and making Indian engineering based companies capable of fully exploring the benefits of IPR, EEPC India is going to organize a seminar on “Intellectual Property Rights” on 26th April 2019 at the EEPC India Head office in Kolkata. “World Intellectual Property Day 2019” will be celebrated globally on the same day with “Sports” as the theme of this year and the day of our seminar has been chosen to  commemorate the same. The Seminar will cover the importance and relevant information on the influence of IPR on various aspects of business and exports particularly in the field of engineering. Deliberations by a number of distinguished dignitaries will surely make this session fruitful for the participants and make our endeavour successful in turn.

OVERSEAS MARKET INFORMATION

Australia
(Source : Consulate General of India, Sydney)

(i) 2019 is off to a slow start with respect to merchandise exports and imports. In Jan 2019, Australia exported merchandise goods to India worth USD 830 million, while importing goods worth USD 312 million from India. Indian merchandise India’s exports to Australia for Jan 2019 witnessed a decrease of 32 % compared to Jan 2018. During Jan 2019 Australia’s export to India declined by 12.9 %. The total merchandise trade between India and Australia was decreased from USD 1.4 b to USD 1.1 b between Jan 2018 and 2019, with a decrease of 19.1 %.

(ii) During the reporting period, the top 20 commodities of export from India to Australia included Railway vehicles, Medicaments, Pearls & precious stones, organo-inorganic compounds, made up articles of textile materials, jewellery, electric power machinery, power generating machinery and parts, articles of apparels & textile fabrics, floor coverings, manufactures of base metal, women / girls clothing, travelling cases and bags, tubes and pipes of iron & steel, fixed vegetable fats & oils, furniture, electrical apparatus for switching, protecting or connecting electric circuits, crude vegetable materials, and pumps for liquids, in that order.

(iii) According to the Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics (BREE), Australia`s energy consumption has consistently risen over the past ten years at an average annual rate of 1.1 per cent. Australia`s demand for oil has risen steadily over recent decades, largely driven by increasing transport sector demand. Though energy diversification has taken place in all industries (including agriculture, industry, residential and commercial sectors), it has not changed in transport. While there been some uptake of electric vehicles in the light passenger sector and some electrification in the passenger rail and bulk rail freight sectors, most transport sectors and particularly heavy road freight, maritime and aviation transport are likely to remain wholly or largely oil dependent for foreseeable future.

(iv) Made in India railway vehicles featured as top export item from India to Australia during Jan 2019. More than US$ 38 million worth of Indian made railway vehicles were exported. It may be mentioned that New South Wales Government ordered 22 driverless metro trains of 6 coaches each built by Alstom in Sri City in India. The metro coaches, built for the Australian government, was the first of its kind India has ever exported. The new train is capable of being operated automatically through the Automatic Train Protection and Automatic Train Operation (ATP/ATO) modes with the help of Alstom’s Urbalis 400 communications-based train control (CBTC) signalling solution.

(v) Export of ‘Coal’ from Australia to India was the main contributor for the volume of bilateral trade between the countries during the reporting period, with a value of USD 639 million, amounting to 58 % of total bilateral trade in value terms.

Analysis of Investment opportunities in Tunisia

Tunisian Government provides many incentives to promote foreign investment in Tunisia.  About 3353 foreign companies operate in Tunisia in diverse sectors. The Government has primarily encouraged export-oriented FDI in key industrial sectors, such as call centers, electronics, aerospace and aeronautics, automotive parts, and textile/apparel manufacturing. Foreign participation is allowed in the privatization program of state-owned or state-controlled enterprises. This has attracted a significant share of Tunisia’s FDI in recent years. The privatization programme has taken place mainly in telecommunications, banking, insurance, manufacturing, and fuel distribution.
