chairman

My dear fellow exporters,

Engineering exports continued its upsurge for the fourth straight month registering 9.4% growth in July 2018 over same period of previous fiscal. Cumulative engineering exports during April - July 2018-19 stood at US$ 26.58 billion as against US$ 23.25 billion during the same period last fiscal, recording 14.34 percent growth year-on-year.

Major contributors to overall growth of engineering exports were industrial machinery, electrical equipment and machinery, air crafts and parts, auto and auto components medical and scientific instruments, bicycle and parts etc..

During July 2018, Indian engineering exports registered positive growth in case of 16 out of 25 top export destinations. USA was the top export destination for India`s engineering exports registering a notable growth of 25.19% during April-July 2018. The other key destinations include UAE, Germany, UK, Mexico, Africa, Nepal and Bangladesh.

EU ranked as the region with highest shipment of engineering products from India during July 2018 with a share of 20.03 percent of total engineering exports followed by North America and Middle East and West Asia. Engineering exports to South Asia registered a noteworthy growth of 34 percent in July 2018.

This positive growth happened despite many issues faced by the exporting community. The growing tension in trade relations between large economies, especially the unfolding tariff war between US and China is a serious concern of the businesses. Initiation of safeguard investigation by the European Commission on import of selected steel products, US investigation on India`s compliance with the norms under Generalized System of Preference and possible extinction of India`s export subsidy schemes intensified the panic among Indian exporting community. Back home, rising raw material cost still remains a major concern for the exporters.

On behalf of EEPC India we are closely watching these changes in the trade discourse and following up with our members and the government to overcome the barriers in order to maintain the growing trend of engineering exports.

Products with Export Potential for India

Description : Motor Vehicles, Trailers, Bicycles, Motorcycles and Other Similar Vehicles

Rationale : For the last 5 years, Canada import market for the Motor Vehicles, Trailers, Bicycles, Motorcycles and Other Similar Vehicles topped the import charts. In April-March 2018, overall automobile exports increased by 16.12 percent. Two and Three Wheelers Segments registered a growth of 20.29 percent and 40.13 percent respectively, while Passenger Vehicles and Commercial Vehicles declined by (-)1.51 percent and (-) 10.53 percent respectively in April-March 2018 over the same period last year. Motorcycles production and assemblage is increasing in India to keep pace with the rapidly growing global market. India must take hold of this opportunity and increase the export percentage of Motor Vehicles, Bicycles, Motorcycles and Other Similar Vehicles.

Significant Trends in Trade and Investment

Details of significant trends : Canada’s total trade with India has historically been very low, and the trend has been continuing this year. Canada’s exports to India and imports from India increased from March 2018 to Apr 2018. Thereby, increasing the growth rate of imports and exports compared with the corresponding period in 2017.

Analysis : Exports from India and imports from India both increased in the month of Apr 2018 vis-a-vis Mar 2018. While the export to India fell w.r.t Apr 2017. The total trade, including exports and imports, is less than 1% of Canada’s total global trade balance. The gap between export and import growth has narrowed compared to previous periods.

Details of significant trends : Canada’s exports to India increased from USD 221 million in March 2018 to USD 250 million in Apr 2018. Canadian exporters built on a strong March with another month of solid gains in April. After rising by 3.6 per cent globally, the previous month, exports were up another 1.6 per cent in April eclipsing the previous all-time monthly high set in May 2017.

Analysis : Canadian exports to India increased from USD 221 million in March 2018 to USD 250 million in Apr 2018. Exports of Mineral Fuels posted a strong 27.94% gain, followed by Ores and Ash (11.05%) and pulp of woods and waste and scrap of Paper (10.90%). Pearls, Precious Stones or Metals, Coins and Jewelry also advanced 9.02%. Remaining top 6 products were in the range from 2% to 10%.

Details of significant trends : Canadian Imports from India increased from USD 316 million in Mar 2018 to USD 403 million in April 2018. Meanwhile, a sharp decline in purchases of foreign cars and consumer goods drove overall Canadian imports down by 2.5 per cent - its lowest level since October.

Analysis : Canadian Imports from India increased from USD 316 million in Mar 2018 to USD 403 million in April 2018. Top import product from India was Motor Vehicles, Trailers, Bicycles, Motorcycles and Other Similar Vehicles with a growth of 12%. Remaining top 6 products were in the range from 4% to 9%.

Details of significant trends : With respect to top competitors of India’s top 5 exports to Canada, the US consistently features as a top 5 competitor in each of the five export categories. Mexico features in 4. China, Japan and Germany feature in 3 categories and South Korea in 2. India faces very tough competition from these largest trading partners of Canada. Apr 2018 also showed competitors like Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Netherlands, Norway, Azerbaijan.

Analysis : While momentum is on exporters` side, recent US trade actions are casting a shadow on growth prospects over the summer. It remains to be seen how tariffs on aluminum and steel will impact exports and, more to the point, whether these measures prove to be temporary or the beginning of a larger trade dispute with broader collateral damage to Canadian exporters and the economies as a whole.

Agro-exporting Potential

Within the portfolio of products that Peru exports by air in 2017, metals, agro-industrial products and textiles stand out, according to figures from the Sunat. In the first group, gold is the most representative, since it exports US $ 7.122 billion, representing 78.2% of the total exported through this channel. On the other hand, agro exports highlighted fresh asparagus, which was the third most exported product through the Jorge Chávez airport, with a value of US $ 309 million in 2017 (3.4% of the total). Likewise, mango ranked 12th and its export through this route reached US $ 30 million in the same year (0.3% of the total). It should be noted that the shipment of fresh products is usually by air, among other reasons, due to shorter delivery times. Despite this, the export of agricultural products by air would still have great potential. For example, certain products that lead the ranking of total exports, such as grapes, avocados and blueberries, fail to take off between air shipments. To contextualize: from 2010 to 2017, exports of grapes grew by 19.7% annually (US $ 654 million in 2017); avocados, an annual 31.8% (US $ 588 million in 2017); and blueberries, 280% annually (US $ 371 million in 2017). Despite this, only asparagus, mangoes and a class of blueberries have managed to stand out among exports by air. In addition, the volume of agro-exports through the port of Callao grew from 2010 to 2017 at a rate of 7.4% per year, from 862 million tons in 2010 to 1.422 billion tons in 2017. However, the volume exported by Jorge Chávez only increased on average by 0.1% per year in the same period. Thus, the exportation of asparagus by air went from representing 84.6% of the total in 2012 to 75.5% in 2017, almost 10 percentage points less. The case of agro exports would not be an isolated one: the volume exported by air of textile, chemical, iron and steel products and the traditional sector as a whole (among them, mining) grows at a lower rate than the exported by the port of Callao.
