chairman

My dear fellow exporters,

Foreign trade data for May 2019 brought some relief for the exporting community as it saw merchandise exports achieved a higher 3.93 percent year-on-year growth in the month as against a feeble 0.64 percent in the previous month. It was even more optimistic for the engineering exporters of India as engineering exports witnessed a noticeable recovery in May 2019 with 4.7 percent year-on-year growth from a decline of 7.7 percent in April 2019.

The recovery of engineering exports was attributed primarily to substantial growth in the exports of ‘Electrical Machinery’ and ‘Ships, Boats and Floating Structures’. However, dismal performance of metal sector, including Iron and Steel continued.

Despite the relief, some concerns are still very much in place regarding the future trend of engineering exports. WTO has already projected weakening of global merchandise exports growth in 2019 due to the adverse impact of US-China tariff war, protectionist policies adopted by several countries including European nations and growing geopolitical disputes in the Middle East. The impact of protectionist policies adopted by both EU and US is expected to increase cross-dumping in other regions and create further pressure on Indian exporters. Additionally the withdrawal of US GSP on imports from India is expected to weigh on Indian exporters especially in iron and steel. Back home, high cost of procuring inputs, frequent fluctuations in Rupee and credit flow may continue to hamper exports going forward.

OVERSEAS MARKET INFORMATION

Australia
(Source : Consulate General of India, Sydney)

2019 is off to a slow start with respect to merchandise exports and imports. In the first three months of the Calendar year 2019, Australia exported merchandise goods to India worth USD 2.261 billion, while importing goods worth USD 855 million from India. Indian merchandise exports to Australia for the period witnessed a decrease of 26.8 % compared to the same period in 2018. During Jan-Mar 2019 Australia’s export to India declined by 21.5 %. The total merchandise trade between India and Australia was decreased from USD 4 b to USD 3.1 b between Jan-Mar 2018 and Jan-Mar 2019, with a decrease of 22.5 %.

During the reporting period, the top 20 commodities of export from India to Australia included Railway vehicles, Medicaments, Pearls & precious stones, refined petroleum oils, made up articles of textile materials, jewellery, organo-inorganic compounds, articles of apparels & textile fabrics, floor coverings, manufactures of base metal, power generating machinery and parts, women / girls clothing, machinery and equipment for specialised for particular industries, travelling cases & bags, furniture, electric power machinery, fixed vegetable fats & oils, tubes and pipes of iron & steel, electrical apparatus for switching, protecting or connecting electric circuits, and crude vegetable materials, in that order.

According to the Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics (BREE), Australia`s energy consumption has consistently risen over the past ten years at an average annual rate of 1.1 per cent. Australia`s demand for oil has risen steadily over recent decades, largely driven by increasing transport sector demand. Though energy diversification has taken place in all industries (including agriculture, industry, residential and commercial sectors), it has not changed in transport. While there been some uptake of electric vehicles in the light passenger sector and some electrification in the passenger rail and bulk rail freight sectors, most transport sectors and particularly heavy road freight, maritime and aviation transport are likely to remain wholly or largely oil dependent for foreseeable future.

Made in India railway vehicles featured as top export item from India to Australia during Jan-Mar 2019. More than US$ 104 million worth of Indian made railway vehicles were exported. It may be mentioned that New South Wales Government ordered 22 driverless metro trains of 6 coaches each built by Alstom in Sri City in India. The metro coaches, built for the Australian government, was the first of its kind India has ever exported. The new train is capable of being operated automatically through the Automatic Train Protection and Automatic Train Operation (ATP/ATO) modes with the help of Alstom’s Urbalis 400 communications-based train control (CBTC) signalling solution.

Potential products of exports for India

Pharmaceutical products - Venezuelan pharmaceutical industry is severely affected by the lack of private investment and relies heavily on the imports for drugs and pharmaceuticals. India is one of the leading manufacturers and exporters of pharmaceuticals in the world and enjoys acceptance in the Venezuelan market due to its quality and competitive prices.

Auto-parts - India is one of the top manufacturers of auto-parts in the world. Venezuela is in dire need of auto-parts for all kinds of vehicles.
