Exports from India mainly include primary and semi-finished iron and steel products, drugs and pharmaceuticals, machinery and instruments, manufactures of metal, etc.  Major imports by India from Ethiopia were: pulses, precious and semi precious stones, vegetables & seeds, leather and spices.India is the second most important source of imports for Ethiopia, contributing 7.27% of all of Ethiopia’s imports next to China.  Indian contributed 1.6% of Ethiopia’s export to the world.

Investment

Some Major investments/Projects awarded to Indian companies in 2017 :

1. An Indian company, MSP Steel & Power Limited, had received a license to secure a mining license to mine iron ore in West Wolega Zone, Oromia. The license would enable the company to produce 155,000 tons of magnesite and ilmenite annually and also create job opportunities for 300 people.

2. Balaaji Manufacturing Plc., an Indian-owned company introduced the first ever assembly plant of electric powered motorcycles dubbed “Scooty” in Ethiopia with an investment of 50 million birr.   The motorcycle, that gets its power from an electrically rechargeable battery, is assembled at a plant in Legetafo. The company has now reoriented its focus on assembling fuel engine powered motorbikes, mostly eyeing the rural parts of the country as demand for two-wheelers is currently increasing. Balaaji is geared to supplying more of such motor bikes with the capacity of 150cc power.

3. Aarti Steel Pvt. Ltd. Co., an Indian company, has announced that it is investing US$75 million to increase its production to 100,000 tons of steel per year.  The expansion will also enable steel makers in Ethiopia to use cold-rolled steel products.  The company which holds 40 percent of share the local steel supply by producing round and square steel tubes.  The company is expected to complete expansion projects in the next Ethiopian year.  Aarti Steel PLC inaugurated a one billion birr steel factory in Ethiopia six years ago.  Currently it has 1.7 billion birr capital and over 200 workers

4. An Indian company, Sonalika Tractors, New Delhi has launched its new Mega capacity tractor of 110 HP and other smaller capacity tractors of 20 HP, 50 HP, 60 HP and implements in the Ethiopian market on 22 July  2017  Mesfin Industrial Engineering PLC (MIE) has been engaging in business with Sonalika Tractors for the last 10 years undertaking local assembly and marketing of SONALIKA brand tractors and implements in Ethiopian market and they have moved forward from selling 75 HP tractors to assembling and marketing 90 HP tractors and now 110 HP tractors.  The plant has the capacity to assemble 240 tractors per month.

5. Ethiopia’s Government concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Arvind Envisol, water Management Company, in the aim of building Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) solutions for the country’s industry parks. Arvind Envisol is the same company that installed ZLD solutions for Hawassa Industrial Park. Following the installation of the solution, the industrial park can treat 11 million liters of waste water per day. In the aim of strengthening the nation’s economy, Ethiopia is currently developing 10 industrial parks in different states.. The government decided to use ZLD solutions as it ensures negative impacts of industrialization on the environment are minimized. In addition to this Arvind Envisol is expected to partner with the government to equip industries and factories outside industrial parks with latest and most effective water treatment technologies.

India, Thailand Risk Landing on Currency Manipulator Watchlist
Khao Hoon 05.01.2018

Nomura Holdings Inc stated that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has exceeded the standard level of currency intervention for the rupee and is being watched by the US. The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd. stated that policymakers in Thailand have also exceeded this level of intervention. The baht has appreciated by 10% while the rupee has risen by 6.4%. Last year, Thailand and India had the highest foreign exchange reserves among the emerging countries in Asia and there is more evidence indicating that the two countries are purchasing dollars in an attempt to control currency appreciation. The foreign exchange reserves of China, South Korea and Taiwan increased at a low level. Khoon Goh, Head of Research at ANZ in Singapore, said that Thailand and India are two nations that have been accumulating foreign exchange reserves in order to restrain pressure from a rise in their currencies. The US will put a country on its watch list if that country has more than $20,000 of trade surplus over the US, has at least 3% current account balance of GDP and purchases foreign exchange of more than 2% of GDP in 12 months. Craig Chan, Global Head of EM FX Strategy at Nomura Securities, said that he believes that the US Department of the Treasury will restrain intervention in the rupee by the RBI. Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi stated that Thailand had a trade surplus of $16,700 over the US and had 10% current account balance of its GDP for six quarters.
