Significant Trends in trade and investment (Sources: EoI, E&C Wing Analysis)

Trade – In Jan-Dec 2018, India France bilateral trade stood at € 11.52 billion (+7.6%) as compared to the corresponding period the previous year. India’s exports to France increased by 11.77% during this period with a rise in exports of following top 10 category products: mineral fuels & oils (96.35%); optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus & parts thereof (29.35%); natural or cultured pearls (16.61%); organic chemicals (23.98%); nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances (7.27%); & footwear (1.47%). However there was a drop in exports of automobiles and parts (-26.46%); & electrical machinery (-4.1%) & articles of apparel & clothing accessories, not knitted or crocheted, (-2.59%).

Meanwhile, French exports to India decreased by 3.42% during the same period: Exports of following top 10 ranked products increased: miscellaneous chemical products (25.02%); essential oils and resinoids; perfumery, cosmetic or toilet preparations (12.6%); optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus & parts thereof (18.54%); organic chemicals (5.15%); plastics and articles thereof (3.9%); aircraft & spacecraft (16.27%); iron & steel (7.28%);. However, exports of following products decreased: electrical machinery & equipment (-24.63%); nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery & mechanical appliances (-13.75%); pharmaceutical products (-0.03%).

Investment – According to the ‘Business France Annual Report 2017’, a public operator supporting French investors in India and Indian investors in France, there are over 150 Indian companies operating in France (including sub-subsidiaries), employing around 7,000 people. Nineteen investments from India were recorded in 2017 (+73%), creating or maintaining 284 jobs (+66%). Indian projects often involved decision-making centres (42% of projects), including a global/European headquarters, and production/manufacturing operations (32%). Investments were mainly made in the software and IT services sector (26% of projects and 52% of jobs generated) and chemicals/plastics industry (21% of projects, 23% of jobs), while location-wise, Indian companies invested primarily in the Paris Region (Ile-de-France) (26% of projects), Nouvelle-Aquitaine (16%), Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (16%) and Hauts-de-France (16%).

Mr. Sarvjeet SOODAN, FS(E&C) had a lively interaction with the students of Head law school in Paris on 15 January 2019. FS (E&C) made a presentation on the subject-India: today and tomorrow.

The Mission organised short business meetings at the Embassy from 16-18 January2019 in order to inform potential French businessmen and investors on the business climate in India. 6 French companies participated in these meetings with Mr. Sarvjeet SOODAN, FS(E&C).

Association des Conquérants Bretons (ACB) organised the new year greetings ceremony (Cérémonie des vœux 2019) on Wednesday 30th January 2019 at the French Senate - Palais du Luxembourg. The event was attended by Senators of Brittany and Paris regions, Mayors, Presidents of various associations and industries. This year India was presented as the guest country and Mr. Sarvjeet SOODAN, FS(E&C) made the key note address. ACB is planning to focus on developing bilateral relations between India and Brittany region.

MRE DECEMBER 2018

The third edition of India France Business Forum was organised by the Indian Embassy in partnership with the Business Club France India in Marseille on December 6-7, 2018. The Deputy Chief of Mission, Mr. Ankan Banerjee & First Secretary (Economic & Commercial) Mr. Sarvjeet Soodan attended the event. There was a special focus on the state of Andhra Pradesh & representatives of the Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board were present at the event. The City of Marseille, the Provence Promotion & Economic Development Agency & the Marseille Tourist Office also collaborated in the organisation of the event which was held at the World Trade Center. Site visits were organised in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d`Azur Region on December 7, 2018. Around 75 companies/institutions attended the event.

The Embassy of India began activities of the year 2019 with the project of revival of India Mexico Business Chamber (IMBC). The Chamber was founded in 2006, however, the activities ceased after 2013. The need for an institutional body like a chamber was increasing felt in past 2 years and the idea was discussed at various levels. The first discussion meeting regarding the revival was held in January. The month also saw participation of FIEO at InterModa 2019 (Jan edition), one of the biggest trade fairs of Mexico in fashion industry. India has been participating in this fair for past several years. 2019 may also become the first year when India would have participation in both January and July fairs of InterModa, if everything went according to the plan.

Minister of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development called for more intense bilateral relations with India: The Namibian Minister of Industrialisation, Trade and SME Development, Tjekero Tweya, represented Namibia and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) at the 9th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit which took place on January 18-20, 2019 in India. During his speech on the official opening of the 9th Global Summit ‘Vibrant Gujarat’, Tweya expressed his sentiments, he called for an intensification of strategic alliances between Namibia and India to yield tactical outcomes, fast-tracking industrialisation and prosperity for the two countries. Tweya said that “Namibia and India’s bilateral trade recorded a steady increase over the past years. Indian companies have invested in Namibia through sectors such as mining, infrastructure development, agriculture and manufacturing”. He further said that India has uninterruptedly pursued capacity building initiatives through the ITEC (Indian Technical &Economic Cooperation) programme and other bilateral agreements to benefits the Namibian people.
