chairman

My dear fellow exporters,

EEPC India has organized its 50th National Award Function on 10th December 2019 in New Delhi for excellence in engineering export during fiscal 2017-18. As much as 111 member exporters have been awarded across eight categories and over 32 product panels for their remarkable contribution in raising engineering exports from India as well as giving brand value of Indian engineering a better recognition worldwide. This year, for the first time, Quality Council of India (QCI) was invited to evaluate companies and the EEPC India-QCI Quality Awards were given to seven companies.Once again, I wholeheartedly congratulate all the award winners for their brilliant performance.

Meanwhile, we have another reason to cheer for our exporting community. In the said award ceremony, Our Chief Guest Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, the Honourable Minister of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India assured the Indian exporting community of all possible support from the government to combat the headwinds and increasing exports in turn. According to the Minister, the government formulatedshort and medium-term strategy to give a push to exports and also in the process of framing a new scheme to ensure higher availability of bank credit to exporters.EEPC India, who has previously urged the government to address the concerns of the engineering exporters, earnestly appreciate these initiatives.

Ravi Sehgal

Amidst India’s faltering merchandise export growth and prolonged contraction in export credit growth, exporters have at least seen some silver lining as both the domestic government and the monetary regulatory authority RBI have been in consultation to ease priority sector lending norms for exports in order to ensure higher flow of credit towards export sector, according to news source. The Commerce and Industry minister has very recently held a meeting with senior public-sector bankers to push for easier and higher flow of credit disbursalfor exporters at cheaper rates. The government is expected to announce a slew of measures to boost export growth very soon while the RBI is also likely to change credit norms in favour of the exporters.

The measures to reinvigorate export credit has been the demand of the exporters as many MSME exporters have already been forced to go out of business due to excessive financial crunch and many are facing the same threat. To ensure availability of hassle-free credit to small exporters is a priority for the commerce minister.According to the latest RBI data, export credit of scheduled banks shrank as much as 36.1% year-on-year as of June 21, even on a low base of 42.7% contraction a year earlier.

The interest subvention provided to the exporters to the extent of three to five percent on bank credit has to make way for suitable alternative as WTO has raised objection to this kind of schemes on the ground of non-compliance. An alternative mechanism to facilitate export credit is desperately required. EEPC India has already suggested refund of embedded taxes for the exporters.

EEPC India, as a premiere trade and investment promotion body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, wholeheartedly thank the government for its initiative to revive exports from India.

India draws up plans to lure global coal miners
Bangkok Post 19.11.2019

India is looking to lower advance payments and offer larger mining blocks to attract global companies to invest in its coal sector for the first time, but industry sources say the measures may not be enough to draw in big international miners. India plans to float global tenders for the first time for coal mining blocks before end-2019, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters in August, a move that could end Coal India Ltd’s <COAL .NS> near-monopoly on the fuel. The auctions, to be aimed at paring back the nation’s coal imports, are intended to attract global miners such as Glencore PLC, BHP Group, Anglo American PLC and Peabody Energy Corp. Vinod Kumar Tiwari, additional secretary at India’s Ministry of Coal, told Reuters the government was looking to reduce the upfront payments of around 10% of the estimated value of blocks that have been awarded. “We are thinking of lowering that,” Tiwari said, although he was not able to say by how much. A firm date for the auctions has not been finalised, and a final roadmap will only be ready after a meeting of top government officials, another coal ministry official said, without specifying a date for the meeting.

India Mulls incentives to lure foreign manufacturers
Bangkok Post 21.11.2019

India is planning to offer 324 companies including Tesla Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline Plc incentives to set up factories in the South Asian nation in a bid to capitalize from the trade war between China and the U.S., according to a document seen by Bloomberg. The government proposes to provide the manufacturers land to set up a factory along with power, water and road access, according to draft of the document prepared by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade and Invest India. Other companies that officials will reach out to include Eli Lilly & Co., South Korea’s Hanwha Chemical Corp., and Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. While the trade war has benefited countries such as Vietnam and Malaysia, rigid land acquisition rules and labor laws have prompted investors to largely ignore India when looking for alternatives to China. The latest proposal may reduce red tape, and set the nation, which expanded at the slowest pace in six years last quarter, on a path to double its gross domestic product to $5 trillion by 2025 -- a goal set Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
