    chairman

    My dear fellow exporters,

There has been a recovery in domestic demand for steel, especially during the post lockdown period, which was bleak since March 2020 dueto the pandemic. Latest estimates of steel productions show that production of crude steel and finished steel registered an increase of 9.5% and 11.4% respectively during July, 2020 over June, 2020. Even consumption of finished steel in July 2020 registered an increase of 10.90% on M-o-M basis but was lower by 29.06% over July, 2019. (Source: Ministry of Steel). The recovery in the sector post Covid-19 pandemic has been `V" shaped.  The continuous increase in consumption during this fiscal led to absorption of inventories with the steel producing companies resulting in a lower closing stock of finished steel at the end of July 2020.

In coming months exports are bound to gain more importance in the country’s policy as there is a shift in the global supply chain towards more than one sources of input. Various experts believe that as MNCs look towards alternative sources apart from China, India can be a potential contestant. This has even come out in the recent speeches of our Hon`ble Prime Minister who has strongly advocated export augmentation and import substitution through an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. In fact simply looking at the finished steel export figures, exports made during July 2020 was significantly higher as compared to exports in July 2019 whereas, import was 63.1% lower compared to import during July 2019.  India remained a net exporter of finished steel during July 2020 with a net trade surplus of 1.08 MT. Significant increase in exports to China, Spain and Italy was recorded in July 2020 as compared to July 2019.

In this context, it is pertinent to mention that while the recent figures show a gradually recovering exports, the surging prices of raw materials are also making Indian exports less competitive in the global platform. Therefore making Indian exports competitive should be the key objective of both Government and industry. Additionally, the Government of India must look at strengthening its trade relations with its major export partners and forge new treaties with potential non-traditional partners.

This is for your kind intervention.

    Mahesh Desai

Amidst India’s faltering merchandise export growth and prolonged contraction in export credit growth, exporters have at least seen some silver lining as both the domestic government and the monetary regulatory authority RBI have been in consultation to ease priority sector lending norms for exports in order to ensure higher flow of credit towards export sector, according to news source. The Commerce and Industry minister has very recently held a meeting with senior public-sector bankers to push for easier and higher flow of credit disbursalfor exporters at cheaper rates. The government is expected to announce a slew of measures to boost export growth very soon while the RBI is also likely to change credit norms in favour of the exporters.

The measures to reinvigorate export credit has been the demand of the exporters as many MSME exporters have already been forced to go out of business due to excessive financial crunch and many are facing the same threat. To ensure availability of hassle-free credit to small exporters is a priority for the commerce minister.According to the latest RBI data, export credit of scheduled banks shrank as much as 36.1% year-on-year as of June 21, even on a low base of 42.7% contraction a year earlier.

The interest subvention provided to the exporters to the extent of three to five percent on bank credit has to make way for suitable alternative as WTO has raised objection to this kind of schemes on the ground of non-compliance. An alternative mechanism to facilitate export credit is desperately required. EEPC India has already suggested refund of embedded taxes for the exporters.

EEPC India, as a premiere trade and investment promotion body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, wholeheartedly thank the government for its initiative to revive exports from India.

Potential products of imports from India

    Commodity - Generating sets, wind-powered

Rationale - In 2019 India was among the top 6 suppliers of wind-powered sets, with 8 units and a 0.33% share. Spain and China were the two main supplying countries with 180 units each. Business opportunities are worth exploring.

Commodity – Balls, iron or steel, for grinding mills

Rationale - In 2019 India was among the top 5 suppliers of iron and steel balls, with a 10.85% share. Argentina, Thailand and Brazil were the three main supplying countries. Business opportunities are worth exploring.

Significant trends in trade and investment

Trade in Goods - Bilateral trade fell by 10.50% in April 2020 as compared to March, 2020. This is mainly due to the effects of the pandemic in Chile and a decrease in the export of copper to India during this month. Exports to India decreased by 2.04% from US$ 72.95 m in March 2020 to US$ 71.46 m in April, 2020. Imports from India decreased by 20.17% from US$ 63.85 million in March 2020 to US$ 50.97 million in April,2020.

Analysis - Bilateral trade figures are highly dependent on copper, the main product being exported from Chile to India. Chile’s exports and imports fell in April 2020 after a small rise the previous month as the coronavirus crisis shut down large parts of the economy.

    Opportunities for investments – Railway

Chilean government has approved a US$ 1.9 billion 2020-22 investment plan of Chilean State Railways. The 2020-22 plan is part of a long-term US$ 5.57 billion investment plan intended to raise the annual number of passengers carried from around 50 million at present to 174 million in 2027, and annual freight tonnage from 11.5 million to 21 million over the same period.

Potential products of exports for India

Pharmaceutical products - Venezuelan pharmaceutical industry is severely affected by the lack of private investment and relies heavily on the imports for drugs and pharmaceuticals. India is one of the leading manufacturers and exporters of pharmaceuticals in the world and enjoys acceptance in the Venezuelan market due to its quality and competitive prices.
