chairman

My dear fellow exporters,

The value of the Rupee has been falling since the beginning of 2018 and today, it slumped 16 paise against the dollar to trade at a life-time low of 71.37 on strong demand for the US currency. This fall of the rupee against the dollar is causing uncertainty for the exporters as they do not know where the rupee value would go tomorrow.

EEPC India has been requesting the RBI and the Government that our nominal exchange rate should be in sync with the real effective exchange rate (REER). The REER is the weighted average of a currency against a basket of other currencies adjusted for inflation. We have suggested to RBI that there should be at most a variation of 10% to 15% between the two so that our exporters do not lose their competitive edge.

We have also requested the RBI that the volatility of the Rupee must be checked as exporters in the MSME find it most difficult when the Rupee moves both ways within a short span of time. This needs to be kept in mind because the first quarter GDP of the current fiscal is over 8% implying that growth pick up is happening and we should not be halting the revival in manufacturing by raising the interest rates to jack up the Rupee and control prices. Let the supply side play out and bridge the output gap so that prices stabilize.

Our efforts to explore non-traditional markets continue. From August 22 to August 25th, we held our trademark exhibition INDEE at the IMTP Exhibition in Manila Philippines. A cross section of companies representing different segments of engineering participate at this metal working show and we were able to firm up not only some orders but also good trade enquiries in the area of solar pumps, carbide tools, copper products, electrical products, metal markers and other mechanical products.

This month we will hold our second INDEE in Bogota, Colombia from September 24th to 28th, 2018. Nearly 80 companies will be participating in this exhibition and this will be our second INDEE in Bogota after 2010.

Prior to Bogota, we will be joining the Business Delegation to Syria and Lebanon which is being led by the Hon’ble Minister of External Affairs, Ms Sushma Swaraj from September 7 to 15, 2018.

It`s set to be an eventful month ahead and I look forward to your support in taking forward the activities for the betterment of our members and the country.

OVERSEAS MARKET INFORMATION

Australia
(Source : Consulate General of India, Sydney)

During the first half of the Calendar Year (Jan-June), Australia exported merchandise goods to India worth USD 6.09 billion, while importing goods worth USD 2.03 billion from India. Indian merchandise Exports to Australia for Jan-Jun 2018 witnessed an increase of 12.7 % over Jan-Jun 2017. Whereas, during the same period Australia’s export to India increased marginally by 2 %. The total merchandise trade between India and Australia was increased from USD 7.7 b to USD 8.1 b between Jan-Jun 2017 and Jan-Jun 2018, with an increase of 5 %.

During the reporting period, the commodities of export from India to Australia included Refined Petroleum, Railway vehicles, Medicaments, Pearls & precious stones, made up articles of textile materials, passenger motor vehicles, jewellery, organo-inorganic compounds, floor coverings, manufactures of base metal, articles of apparels and textile fabrics, travelling cases and bags, fixed vegetable fats & oils, equipment for distributing electricity and women / girls clothing, in that order.

According to the Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics (BREE), Australia`s energy consumption has consistently risen over the past ten years at an average annual rate of 1.1 per cent. Australia`s demand for oil has risen steadily over recent decades, largely driven by increasing transport sector demand. Though energy diversification has taken place in all industries (including agriculture, industry, residential and commercial sectors), it has not changed in transport. While there been some uptake of electric vehicles in the light passenger sector and some electrification in the passenger rail and bulk rail freight sectors, most transport sectors and particularly heavy road freight, maritime and aviation transport are likely to remain wholly or largely oil dependent for decades to come.

In Jan-Jun 2018 period, export of Passenger Motor Vehicles from India to Australia increased by 222 % over Jan-Jun 2017 (with value of US$ 58 million) and ‘equipment for distributing electricity’ by 187 % during the same period (with value US$ 23 million). The increase in export of Passenger Motor Vehicles from India could be the impact of closing down of manufacturing plants of vehicles. In the last couple of years, many of the assembling and manufacturing plants of vehicles in Australia were closed down. The last in the line was ‘Holden’ (General Motors) manufacturing plant that was closed down in October 2017. There is still enough space for passenger motor vehicles in Australian market. Companies could look at this sector closely to increase their exports to Australia. The Consulate will be happy to assist interested companies in India.

Export of ‘Coal’ from Australia to India was the main contributor for the volume of bilateral trade between the countries for the period Jan-Jun 2018, with a value of USD 3.9 billion, amounting to 35 % of total bilateral trade in value terms.

Egypt
(Source : Embassy of India, Cairo)

Bilateral Trade: As per CAPMAS latest available data, Egypt exports to India in May 2018 reached to US$ 92 million. While imports from India reached to US$ 171.4 million.

H.E. Mr. Rahul Kulshreshth, Ambassador of India to Egypt, met with H.E. Mr. Hisham Tawfik, Minister of Public Business Sector on 29 July 2018. They discussed the possibilities of cooperation with the state owned companies in various sectors including textiles, technology and automotive. They also discussed the status of project proposals from the Holding Companies affiliated to the Ministry of Public Business Sector to avail of the Lines of Credit offered by the Government of India and reviewed the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme, offered to the officials of the Ministry and its Holding Companies.
