chairman

My dear fellow exporters,

Despite the challenges of the global trading system, India’s latest ranking of 77 in the Ease of Doing Business, a huge improvement from last year’s rank by 23 points, has revitalized the economic agents and the policy makers in the country. Indeed, the GST, in spite of its teething problems is now slowly settling down into a stable system. Member exporters point out that they are getting their refunds in 3 days and that is helping them in managing their cash cycle better and depend less on bank funds. Further improvement in technical glitches and last year’s refund problems remains to be sorted out to make it a unique indirect tax system in the world.

Another area of hope the focus of the Government and of the Prime Minister is towards making MSME the principal segment of economic activity. 93% of the GST revenues come from the MSME. At the time of writing the Prime Minister presented, what he called the “12 Diwali Gifts” to the MSME sector. While the notifications are yet to come out, the move to raise the benefit of interest equalization from 3% to 5% for packing credit and providing interest subvention of 2% for credit loans up to Rs 1 crore (to be given in 59 minutes), are among the 12 major steps that have been announced by the Prime Minister.

Let me conclude by wishing you all a very Happy Diwali in Advance.

Malta-India Business Forum: Hon’ble Vice President Venkaiah Naidu attended the closing session of the Malta-India Business Forum on 17 September 2018 at the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Valletta, Malta. The Forum was attended by President of Malta Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion of Malta Carmelo Abela, Minister of State of Finance Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla, as well as members of the Maltese business communities and a high-level Indian delegation from both the business and political sectors.

Speaking of the growing strength of the Indian economy, Hon’ble VP said “Over the last decade, India has witnessed a positive spring in stock market indices, foreign exchange reserves and public investment in infrastructure. Indian economy is growing at the rate of 8% plus. Currently it is the fastest growing, major economy in the world. Hon’ble VP said that India has opened up its economy in almost all sectors. Government has also taken a policy decision to be business friendly.”

President of Malta Coleiro Preca said that the Business Forum will further enhance tangible ways of bringing our peoples together through trade and business, and in view of the fact that Malta had already experienced the benefits of Indian investment in the pharmaceutical industry and ICT that Malta was now looking forward to further strategies of expansion.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion Carmelo Abela said that “initiatives of this kind serve as a valuable platform, allowing commercial stakeholders from both sides to become more acquainted with the opportunities presented by our respective business environments”. Minister Abela concluded his address with expressing hope for more collaboration and success between the two countries. He said that India and Malta have clearly signalled their commitment to maintain the momentum that has been generated in a bid to strengthen our bilateral trade ties. In so doing, while ensuring benefits for our respective countries, entrepreneurs, and citizens, we are seeking to be part of a global solution rather than part of the problem.”
