India – United Kingdom Relationship

India and the UK share close and friendly ties. Our Prime Minister’s visit to UK during the end of 2015 took the relationship between the largest and the oldest democracies to new heights. Total merchandise trade between India and UK reached USD 15.8 billion in 2013-14 but then declined in the next two fiscal to come down to USD 14 billion in 2015-16 due to slump in both export and import. Trade balance remained mostly in favour of India. Post BREXIT, India and UK are now considering a FTA between them, the implementation of which will definitely boost the bilateral trade and economic relationship.

The century old relationship between India and the UK took a new turn with the visit of the Indian Prime Minister to UK during late-2015. It was agreed that the City of London could play an important role in channeling investments into Indian infrastructure projects, leveraging its capital and expertise. Several Indian companies planned to raise finance through the City of London. Commercial deals worth over £9.3 billion between Indian and British companies were announced.

Total merchandise trade between India and UK reached USD 15.8 billion in 2013-14 but then declined in the next two fiscal to come down to USD 14 billion in 2015-16 due to slump in both export and import. India’s main exports to the UK are garments and textiles, machinery and instruments, petroleum products, footwear and leather, manufactures of metals, gems and jewellery, engineering goods, transport equipment and parts, spices, drugs & pharmaceuticals and marine products while India's major imports from the UK include machinery and equipment, ores and metal scraps, precious and semiprecious stones, silver, metals, aircrafts parts, beverages and spirits, machinery, engineering goods, and other professional instruments other than electronics, non-ferrous metals and chemicals. Trade balance was in favour of India. In this regard, it would be worth mentioning that both India and UK are considering a FTA between them, the implementation of which will take the relationship to a new height.

Economic Scenario : United Kingdom
Economic growth figure defied the fear of post-Brexit slowdown and GDP growth once again seen at a decent annual rate of 2.2% during the fourth quarter of the last year, matching the pace of expansion recorded in the third quarter. For the entire 2016, however GDP growth slowed down to 2% as against 2.2% and 3.1% in the previous two years respectively. The Office for National Statistics of UK said fourth-quarter GDP growth was dominated by services driven by strong contribution from retail sales and travel agency services as consumers continued to spend in shops and online. Business services and finance industries were also strong at the end of last year. Accommodating monetary and fiscal policy coupled with a weakening sterling also supported the growth in the second half of the last year. Another major supportive factor to balanced growth was narrowing down of trade deficit in the fourth quarter over the previous one.

Outlook:
However, the economy is expected to face a slowdown in the year ahead as the mid-to-long-term impact of Brexit has not yet been felt. Inflation has been picking up of late and the job market may also shiver a bit if it is to keep pace with the rising inflation. Post-Brexit cautiousness and higher cost may bite into manufacturing and construction. However, a recession is not at all likely in Britain.
