Bilateral Trade between India and Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is one of India’s largest trade partners among the SAARC member nations and India in turn is the largest trade partner of Sri Lanka worldwide. Trade between these two countries grew rapidly particularly after the India-Sri Lanka FTA came into force in May 2000. Sri Lanka has also long been a priority destination for direct investment from India. India is among the top four investors in Sri Lanka with cumulative investments of over US$ 1 billion since 2003 invested diversely across strategically important sectors. A number of new investments from Indian companies are also in the pipeline or under implementation. On the other hand, Sri Lankan investments into India also saw an increasing trend in the last few years.

Sri Lanka is one of the major recipients of development credit given by the Government of India, with total commitment of around US$2.63 billion, including US$ 458 million as grants. India’s total merchandise exports to Sri Lanka have increased during the last completed fiscal. India has favourable trade surplus and has maintained positive Balance of Trade (BoT) over the last five years.

India’s engineering exports to Sri Lanka has also increased from US$ 1.41 billion in 2016-17 to US$ 1.47 billion in 2017-18, registering a growth of 3.9 percent. India has maintained a positive trade surplus in case of engineering goods. India’s export of Construction and building material machinery has increased over the years, recording a year-on-year growth of 209.8 percent in 2017-18 viz-a-viz 2016-17.
